Programming Languages

There are many different programming languages, each with its strengths and weaknesses.

New to programming? We recommend starting with a tried and true language like Java or Python. These languages are widely adopted and have a wealth of resources available online. If you’re familiar with coding but want to take your skills to the next level, we suggest trying something newer like Javascript or Ruby on Rails. It languages using in web development, so they’re perfect if that’s your interest. Finally, if you have years of experience coding in a particular language and want to try something new, we suggest checking out some more unknown languages like Go or Rust. There may be more challenging to learn at first, but they offer unique advantages that make them a good fit for your next project.

Applying with the Programming Languages

So, you’re looking to start programming and want to know which language to begin? There is no one-size-fits-all answer. However, if your focus is on web development or software development, you’ll likely be interested in at least learning Python, Java, and C++.

Python is famous for beginners because of its readability and ease of use. Java and C++ are more powerful languages but require more time to learn. If you want to build something from scratch, both Java and C++ are good choices.

You may want to consider another language like R or MATLAB if you’re only interested in programming for specific data analysis or machine learning tasks. There are designed for particular purposes but can also adapt for other uses.

Acceptance Rate

Showcase your skills by submitting a coding challenge for a job that doesn’t require a programming language. Sites like Codecademy and Codestar offer free challenges that you can complete to show your coding skills. If you’re applying to a job that does require a programming language, be sure to submit your resume and code samples in that language. If you’re unsure which language to use for your application, think about the project you would like to work. If the project is too large or complicated for you to complete on your own, consider hiring a programmer to help with the development process. Once you have an idea of the language and platform you will use, find resources online or in books related to that language and platform.
