Computational Seismology Postdoc

The Seismo-Acoustics team in the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral research associate in seismology. You will develop machine learning techniques with applications to seismic source characterization and nuclear explosion monitoring. Your work will involve a combination of developing new signal analysis capabilities and applying newly developed and existing machine learning tools. The successful candidate will collaborate with scientists at LANL and with external industrial and academic partners. The term of the appointment is two (2) years, with the option to extend to a year depending on performance and funding availability.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Education/Experience:

A Ph.D. degree in a STEM field related to seismology, geophysics, applied mathematics, computer science, physics, or other related fields. For a postdoctoral appointment the candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and must be within five years of completion of the Ph.D.

The mission of the EES Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory is to solve complex problems of importance in environment, energy, and national security by using our capabilities in earth and environmental sciences. The division is a highly interactive, well-funded research organization with an annual budget of approximately $100 million and a staff of approximately 240. The core disciplines of EES Division include Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geodynamics, Geography, Hydrology, Atmospheric Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, Computational Science and Geotechnical Engineering. The disciplines are organized into groups within the division, which consist of 30-40 Scientists, with approximately 20 support staff, post-docs, and students. Each group has a variety of scientific programs, on the order of $20-$25M in direct funding. The members of each group are organized into 3 or 4 teams, led by team leaders who support the Group Leader directly.

Requirements

Minimum Job Requirements:


  • Record of proficiency in deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, Caffe2, or Keras
  • Research experience in code development, and applications in seismology
  • Proficiency in programing languages such as Python or Julia
  • Communication skills as evidence by publications and oral presentations at conferences
  • Experience working in interdisciplinary teams

Education/Experience:
